The top 10 herbal remedies and supplements that impact on dental conditions or procedures.

Date TBC: Dr Geraldine Moses

Studies repeatedly show that most Australians take some sort of vitamin, dietary supplement or herbal remedy on a regular basis.  Despite this, patients often fail to declare their use of complementary medicines to their dental practitioners.  This is usually because consumers are unaware that complementary medicines can negatively impact oral health and dental procedures. In this presentation, Geraldine will identify the Top 10 complementary meds that impact on dental diagnoses and treatments and explain how to manage them.

Restorative Risks and Rewards…managing the complex cases and compromised teeth

Date TBC: Dr Ian Meyers

The restorative requirements for patients can vary considerably, as can the individual patient expectations and tolerances. Patients frequently present with a range of complex restorative needs and it can be difficult to determine the most appropriate restorative interventions. There may be concerns over the long-term stability of the dentition and which teeth should be retained and which teeth may need extraction. This webinar will review a number of patient cases and discuss the range of restorative opportunities available, and their use in developing predictable and personalised management regimes for patients.

  • What is the management protocol for patients on yearly zoledronic acid injections (‘Aclasta’) for osteoporosis who require a dental extraction?

  • A patient presents advising that they have been told they have a methacrylate allergy, and that they cannot have composite resin fillings. What restorative materials should I use for this patient?

  • I have a patient who claims she can't take NSAIDs due to her coeliac disease. She is currently on Panadeine Forte (2x tds every day) and has asked me to prescribe more. What analgesics are most appropriate for a patient with coeliac disease? Can she take NSAIDS? What antibiotic would be most appropriate for pts with coeliac disease?

  • I am a dental hygienist. Can I provide treatment on a nervous patient under nitrous oxide sedation?

  • A previously healthy 80 year old patient has over the past few years developed a dry mouth and root surface caries on several teeth. What is the best way to control the caries progression, and how should these carious lesions be restored?

  • My 66yo female patient has a spreading odontogenic infection for which I feel antibiotics are indicated. Unfortunately, she claims a legitimate allergy to amoxicillin and cefalexin, so I have to prescribe clindamycin. The currently recommended dose in Therapeutic Guidelines Oral and Dental is 300mg tds for 5 days, which requires a supply of 30x 150mg clindamycin capsules. However only 24x 150mg clindamycin caps are permitted on the PBS dental list. How do I write the script so she can get 30x capsules dispensed?

  • I took a panoramic radiograph for a patient and noted a radiopacity in the left submandibular region. I submitted it for evaluation by a dentomaxillofacial radiologist, and it is consistent with a calcified lymph node. May I know what further investigations or management is required?

  • My patient is experiencing intermittent ulcers which last for about a week and they are very painful. I sent her to her doctor who did some blood tests, and according to my patient these results were all fine. She was prescribed antibiotics for the ulcers however they keep recurring. What should I do next?

  • My patient says he has previously had malignant hyperthermia and has been told he should avoid local anaesthetics. Is there any truth that he shouldn’t have LA?
